My son with autism (i think). He hate school..?
Question: He is 5 next year. We spied on him (with teachers permission) and we can see that he is bored with ABC and colouring. And this gives the teacher headache cos he'll run out of the classroom whenever he heard something interesting. By 3+ he can spelled many words and recognise numbers to thousands and doing simple maths by 4. One teacher even hint that remain in 4yo class might suit him well cos there's a teacher there who can 'control' him. Imagine after 2 years there they still expect him to learn ABC and counting to ten. He has very limited speech and tried to play with others but students ignore him cos of his speech problem. When ask he'll just say I don't want to go to school, I want Playstation . Now even his teachers worried if he can fit in 5yo class cos he has trouble sitting still (but not hyperactive). There is no special class for him in my country.. any useful suggestions? Many thanks in advance.
Answers: I am sorry to hear that there is no special class for children with autism in your country. Since you mentioned that there is a teacher that can control him, maybe it would be an option for him to stay in her class as they have suggested but instead of doing the same work as that class if he is not on their grade level, perhaps the teacher could let him do work that he is able to do. By doing it this way, your son may stay on task better and enjoy school. I believe he is getting bored.
Well, first you need to KNOW if he has autism. That should be your first priority. It sounds like he may be bored with how the classroom is ran. If he knew how to spell, recognize numbers and do math problems at the age of 3, then yes he is bored he needs to be given something that sparks his attention and that makes him want to learn and do more. Maybe you should look into another school. NEVER give into letting the PlayStation come before school. Hmmmm, maybe he's a visual/hands on type of learner. Get him tested for the autism and then to see what type of learner he is.
My son is 6 and he is very advanced. He could read at 3 and was multiplying and dividing at 5. I understand what you mean when you say your son is bored in class. What you need to do is talk to the teachers and see if the subjects that he is advanced in, if he could move up one or two grade (just for those classes) because it is very important for the child to grow up around his friends of his own age. This will challenge his mind and keep him interested. Help him at home like I did. Challenge him at home. Tell him if he reads a book he can play video games for two hours. Make him talk in complete sentences for the same type of reward. I know from experience that it works. Good luck and make sure you love on him everyday and tell him how proud you are of him everyday. It really builds their self esteem.

It sounds like he might be hyperlexic. That is a form of autism whereby the child reads very early and may have math or other savant abilities but is socially backward and may have speech problems. If you google hyperlexia (without quote marks), you will find more information about it and learn ways to help him, if that's what he has. Montessorri education will suit your son perfectly, Dont set down his enthusiasm, feed his hunger for learning, you train him with still more level books, that he will learn eagerly. teach him maps, computer programs, teach him spoken english dont let him to playstation. He is a miracle, feed him well and bring him in bright colours. Best of luck.
