What can I do with my student? Ok here is a little background. I work the after school. There is one teacher..
Question: to every 15 children. There are no aids for us. kids are in school at 7:30 and we get them from 2:30 - 5:00 (12:30 5:00 on Fridays) kids range in age from k-6 but each grade is kept separate (all 2nd in one class all 3rd in another ect.) each day we do homework and then at 4:00 to a special class like pe or art (we have one teacher who does each class. ex. an art teacher will do one art project the whole week and by the end of the week each class has done the art project with the art teacher). I have one student who is 5. I know that by the time he gets to after school he is tired and everything but when it is time to go to the next class he will just go dead weight on us (limps his body and wont move) at times he screams and times he wont say a word. I have 15 kids I need to get to the next class and I can’t send them there on their own and I can’t leave him alone. I can’t pick him up. We’ve talked to mom but it doesn’t help and we can’t kick him out or she will lose her job. Help!
Answers: ok, you and him and his family are put in a bad situation but have you ever thought about it from the kid's point of view? do you know why he is always acting up and not wanting to do it? is it because of something going on at home or is it just that he is tired of everything that he and his mom and brothers are going on with financially....... i know he is just 5 but maybe this affects him by him not getting toys or something very simple like that because to kids, these kind of things are very important and help them get through rough childhood times.......maybe you need to give him something to look forward to such as a treat or prize and slowly turn him into a good student, but i am NOT saying that you try and bribe him into anything.....maybe he is just having a hard time compared to other kids and needs some special attention but doesn't want the wrong kind of attention.......
i hope that this helps:)
Can you maybe just give him an area for nap-time or something? He's awfully young to be working for that long, it sounds like he needs time to crash.
try giving him something to look forward to or a toy or something he likes fidgiting with to make him stay quiet and focused.
I think that it would be best if he were to go home afterschool with another student's parents that the mother can trust until she gets off from work or he should stay in the main/nurse's office if he is tired. Or better yet, she should get a family member to come for him when there is a problem.
You said there are 15 kids to each teacher, and they are seperated, do you have to keep the same children, or can you switch some 6 year olds in your group with some 6 year olds in another group with another aid? This child seems to really need a nap, that's a good thing, can you and the other aids find a few other children who at that time may need to nap as well? They usually have a couple of mats in the PE rooms for somersaults, and other such activities, you could exchange children at the time of naps and tell the mothers or fathers that they must provide a blanket, and small pillow in order to allow the child to take a nap. People believe that children who take naps will not go to be at night, it's a lie, they are more well adjusted, well behaved, and have a nicer personality when they are allowed a rest, it doesn't affect thier bed time either, they go to bed with the same attitude as they did before, maybe a better one. Kids are the same as us, they need down time, you can't push one thing after another on them. If you are able to, maybe you can make the nap a choice for all ages, and since it's not an activity, one aid can be responsible for the napping children, while the other aids take the rest of the kids for their activites. This one kid, may be the answer, not the problem. Hope this helps.
