Smart preschooler , idiot high-schooler?
Question: Can someone explain me?
I come from Europe, married a darling American and now I live here in the US .
I don't understand something.
In the USA toddlers, even newborns are prompt to learn ABC's and 123's , shapes, etc
Preschoolers learn about the solar system , reading and writing
Then by 4th or 5th grade when they SHOULD master all these skills , they regress and most kids can hardly read or write.
High School students can't spell or know basic geography , history , chemistry or math.
Even many graduate people with college struggle with this .
The question is why almost everybody here has a High school diploma if they don't deserve it ?? Why they put so much pressure on toddlers to learn the ABC's if later they can't spell and read??
In Europe you have to work hard for it . In order to have the minimum passing grade you have to know the basic of general culture.
Answers: Welcome to America: the land of opportunity for those who want it, and for the rest: a place to ***** and moan about our own hypocrisy.
I am a college drop out (for financial and personal reasons; I didn't fail out). But that doesn't mean that I'm still not intelligent. I maintain that a majority of the problem is simply a lack of interest. Correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't there a study conducted that showed an improvement in basic comprehension between children who had parents actively participating in their children's education compared to those who do not?
I fully believe that it is a parent's job to encourage and participate in not only their child's early development but also their education. This is such a crucial time for a child to develop so many skills: interpersonal, verbal, spatial, etc. The problem is that parents today are so focused on themselves and over-crowding their schedules with too many appointments that keep them away from their families that the children find themselves lacking any direction, thus they lose interest in something so valuable and defining to their identity: basic education.
I'm so disappointed when I hear someone (whether it's a child or adult) say how they hate reading. How can you possibly HATE to read? Reading opens up an entire world of imagination and creativity, something that a movie or television show can definitely NOT do.
If you're a parent who stumbles across my answer, and you think to yourself: This girl has no idea what she's talking about. She doesn't understand that I just don't have the time because of.
Here's what I have to say: When was the last time you did something for yourself? Did you go buy something as a reward for losing that ten pounds? Did you go to a movie with your spouse? Did you go get your nails done, or went to a football game recently? Well if you have time to do any of those activities (for which you CONSCIOUSLY set aside time in your day to do that activity):
How can you not have twenty minutes to read a story to your child at bed time?
they can spell and read.
thank you very much
I dunno about you, but Im about to move to a remote country to raise my own food, kids, and family the Natural, old fashioned way. To teach our kids to work hard for what you get, etc.
today's media and laziness makes this happen.
plus the distraction of technology, video games, and tv.
That is an incredible point. I had never realized that.
It's because parents take more control over their toddlers' learning and leave high school to the public school system. At least that's part of it.
because once they saw what was going on with graduates and highschool students , they really put the pressure on to teach little kids these things young, because as a highschool student i was never taught about geography or anytthing and im quite bad at it .. so bassically they are trying to make the new generation are smarter one than mine =]
because if the teens are trouble they just wanna push them on through and so they dont get on their nerves!
In general, America places too much emphasis on people's social status, as you can tell with our obsession with people like Paris Hilton. For whatever reason, being intelligent and educated has become uncool. Kids don't try as hard to get good grades and learn because our society doesn't place as much value on it as we do being hot or trendy. Plus, its pretty much a nation of instant gratification ... learning takes effort.
Because America is all about shortcuts and doing things more easily, while ignoring what is more important.
We're all so smart back here in the UK heh heh heh
I know what you mean...I spend 5 or 6 hours a night doing homework...and If I don't have homework then I study even if I don't have a test the next day...I have all A's because I work for them yet I see retards getting all these second chances and stuff when they don't even try. Only thing about school I didn't like was my ACT score...on science I made a 23(which is really bad) but I didn't know any type of strategy...It lowered my score to 27 which isn't really horrible but it's lower than I want.
The average high schooler needs a wake up call. How you spend your time at school affects how you spend your time when you get out of school. Most people just blow school off and then they complain about having it hard and stuff. I just want to tell them that it's their own fault...
Oh...and Vietnam is not in Africa, just so you know. Someone actually said that today. It's so sad.
I think you're taking the hype of a small group of students and applying it to the general population of a huge country. Check the scores and college application rates of high-school students from most states and I think you'll be surprised. I'm surprised that someone from Europe, with their value on un-slanted news, would fall victim to such propaganda.
I am not sure where you are getting information from but not ALL high schoolers have problems with geography, history, chemistry or math. and I assure you children here have more than a basic understanding of our culture...
Our school system is undergoing a huge transformation thanks to NCLB. Teachers and administrators are being held accountable. I am not a fan completely because I think it puts pressure on teachers to deliver scores not true knowledge and maybe that is what you're talking about.
In our culture you have to pass Regents or some other set of exams to graduate and I guarantee our kids are working harder than any generation of children at any time in the US. We may not be quoting Tennyson or Shakespeare as we walk down the street, but if we were the stupid country you seem to be intent on making us out to be no one would want to come here to be successful and compete.
I don't know of many kids who graduate highschool not knowing how to read or write. How do you know what people know and dont know? You are making alot of assumptions. We do work hard to get our diplomas but depending on your goals for later in life, the requirements can vary. I am so tired of hearing how you Europeans have it all down and us Americans slack off and have everything hand to us. There are people of low intelligence everywhere as well as people with no motivation. Our school system maybe flawed in some areas and there are many reasons for that.... i.e economical, parental involvement, over population.... but it is improving. With a country this large there is bound to be imperfections.
Might I add that there was an online geography challenge open to people in the United States and England to see if it was true that Americans had no knowledge of world geography.... The Geography Cup 2006. Do you want to know the outcome? The Americans won.
You are generalizing.
The bozos just get all of the press. There are some blazingly intelligent Kids out there.
My Son and many of his friends passed the 10th grade graduation practice tests in the 8th grade. Tested out of 9th grade science and history and are getting straight A's in the 10th grade classes they are taking.
Don't believe all of the nonsense you hear on US TV. It is for the most part propaganda.
Its not like Europe with real news like the BBC.
Love and blessings Don
I think its because they push babies and toddlers too much and also in elementary school. So, by the time they get to 13 or 14 they had enough. They don't let kids be kids in our country for too long. They want them to grow up too fast and not be babies anymore.
Great point. It's amazing that we send 3rd graders home with 3 hours of homework everyday and then allow kids that cannot read to graduate from high school.
The rush to educate preschoolers is a somewhat recent occurrence. When children are tiny, parents tend to have more time to dedicate to them. By the time they are in the middle school grades, life has become very busy and the same parents who read to the kids every night and practiced flash cards are just trying to get them all into bed so they can have a minute of peace.
Of course EVERy child doesn't regress, and it is a huge overgeneralization to say most can hardy read or write or high school students can't spell or know basic ...
It is a sad fact that once kids are old enough to be on their own a little, a lot of parents decide to let them run their own lives. Kids need a lot of supervision to develop into everything they can be, but seldom get it. It is a sad fact that many schools have lowered their standards to raise their graduation rate. And our whole society is paying the price.
You are right to be concerned. You might want to consider getting on your local school board, or serving in a volunteer capacity in your local schools to encourage your school system to be its best for your children.
You said: ... most kids can hardly read or write
That is absolutely not true where I live (California). I think you're exaggerating.
But go ahead, nobody's looking, you may do your European Superiority Dance now! ;-)

I would say that a tutor is a good idea. Just remember that things happen for a reason and if it happens, it happens. Also though, passing school now is a big dictator on life. Try as hard as you can,
