Hard math Question, very confusing??!?!?
Question: The ratio of boys to girls at a party was 3:2. If there were 20 people at the party, then how many were boys?
Then: Could you explain to me how this problem works, so I could figure it out on my own, please, and thank you =)
Answers: Lol this is simple
3:2 are actually units representing the girls and boys respectively. If you draw a model, you will have boys having three blocks as opposed to the girls having two.
In the 20 people, we add 3 and 2 to get 5 units. Now we find how many people are in 1 unit by 20/5 = 4
Since there are 3 units of boys, 4 x 3 = 12
Ans: 12
For every 3 boys there are 2 girls. That makes a group of 5. Since there are 20 people at the party, there are 4 groups of 5.
4x3= 12 boys
4x2= 8 girls
Take each ratio and then figure out how many groups there would be in the total.
For every 3 boys at the party, there are 2 girls. Bad party, by the way. So assume that these groups show up in sets of 5 (3 boys, 2 girls). How many groups have come in if there are 20 people?
1 group = 5
2 groups = 10
3 groups = 15
4 groups = 20
Algebraically, it's this:
3x + 2x = 20
5x = 20
x = 4
3*4 = 12 boys
Here's the answer - there were 12 boys and 8 girls.
Here's the explanation -
For questions like these, one way to think about the 3:2 ratio that they give you in the beginning is to think, This means that in every group of 5 people, 3 people are boys and 2 are girls.
Now, how many groups of 5 people can there be at a party with 20 people? 4 groups, right?
In each group of 5, there are 3 boys. And there are 4 groups altogether... So, there are 12 boys total.
Once you get your answer, here's the way to check it.
If you have 12 boys and 8 girls, then the ratio is now 12:8.
Think of it like a fraction, 12/8, and then reduce it.... it becomes 3/2... which is the same as 3:2!
The answer only requires for you to understand the ratio. For every three boys there were two girls, restated for every five people there were 3 boys and two girls.
You can get the answer two ways. we will go the simple one first
5people=3boys+2girls or
5=3+2 then muntiply everything by 4 because 4x5=20
20=12+8 or
20people =12boys+8girls
The other way to so;lve is to devide 20 by 5, and you still get the multiplying factor of 4
hope that helps.
the answer is 12 boys and 8 girls
add the ratio together you get 5
devide the total number of people by that number
20 devided by 5 = 4
there fore 3 x 4 gives you 12
and 2 x 4 gives you 8
hope this helps
