How long should one study for the SAT?

Answers: Some people say one year, and other extremists say that you should have started your Freshman year.

There are two key ways to prepare for the SAT without having to dedicate your entire high school career to studying and at the same time achieve a good score. This is the routine to maximize your score and lower your time input.

1) Pay attention in your classes, especially your Math and English classes. ALL of the SAT is information and methods that you will be introduced to in High School, so the biggest mistake you could make is to goof off in class. Focus on Geometry, Pre-Algebra, Trigonometry, and maybe some advanced Algebra. This is mostly the grab-bag where the SAT finds its problems in Math. For the Critical Reading, make sure you review some of the fiction and non-fiction works you've read in the school year. Try reading the Reader's Digest or A Short History of Nearly Everything by Bill Bryson. These books are non-fiction, and though boring, will prepare you well for the kinds of passages you will expect to see for the SAT.

2) Start at least one or two months before the exam. Purchase either the CollegeBoard's SAT book or the KAPLAN SAT Book. Both are very helpful and will let you get familiarized with the test. Dedicating just 45 min - 1 hour at least every two to three days of the week purely for the SAT will help. Review each section individually (Math, Critical Reading, etc)... it WILL take a lot of time, but the results are worth the effort! Then, with your final few weeks remaining before the exam, take long-stretches of time to take practice exams. It will help you build your stamina for the exam so it won't wear you down quite so much.

Good luck!
