Taking EIT or PE next week?
Question: How are you preparing for the exam and how confident are you?
Answers: I took the PE for chemical engineering a few years ago.
I bought a study guide and worked all the problems beforehand. I was very nervous, but the questions on the actual exam were much easier than the ones in the study guide. I passed easily.
The main problem is the time constraint on the essay/problems session. If you get stuck on a very time-consuming multi-step problem, remember you can get partial credit if you show how you set up the problem and explain how to finish solving it. Also, you can make simplifying (time-saving assumptions and get close to full credit if you provide an estimate of the percentage of error introduced by your simplifying assumption.
If you get completely stuck on a problem move onto the next one and come back to it if you have time. It's very easy to spend your whole time on a sticky problem then you will blow the rest of the test.
Bring some good reference books (e.g., Chemical Engineer's Handbook) and mark the tables and pages you think you will need ahead of time so you can find them quickly during the exam. Bring just the reference books you will need. Some people brought file boxes full of books they had to wheel in on a dolly. There is no way you will have time to use that many books.
P.S. Be sure to get a good night's sleep the night before and show up early for the exam. The less added stress you have, the better off you'll be. Good luck!
I took the PE exam in '04. There was no partial credit. Either you pencil in the correct answer or you do not.
For which discipline are you going to sit?
I agree that your time is best spent working problems.
I understand that the exam is next weekend. If you haven't yet begun to study, then you don't deserve to pass. Otherwise, good luck!
