I'm thinking of applying to grad school...how long should I allow for GRE preparation?
Answers: I would not give it more than a month. The work on the GRE is really the SAT all over again. Brush up on your math skills and go over the style of the testing then just take it. It isn't hard.

Allow atleast two to three months,if you want to get a good score.In some schools your admission solely depends upon the GRE score.I spent almost three months to master myself in the Verbal section of the GRE.If you are engineering or math major the schools will mainly concentrate on your quantitative section.For other majors they will mainly see verbal section.My advice is to spend atleast 2 months.Good luck.
Everyone learns at a different pace. First, you should assess where you are on the exam by taking a free practice exam. The exam is administered by ETS. You can get free practice exams on their website at www.ets.org.
If you need some remedial help, you must decide if you learn best through self-study or in a classroom situation. If you do well with self-study, get yourself at least two GRE study books with included practice exams on CD. If math is your weak point, I would suggest getting Math Smart by The Princeton Review (in your bookstore's reference section) to help you brush up. When you are scoring in your acceptable ranges on the practice exams, you are ready to take the test.
If you learn better in a classroom environment, check with your local colleges and learning centers for exam prep classes. Good luck.

It allows for an extended period of serious study on a timeline, and seriously gives you time to think about the schools you want to go to and what scores are necessary. I currently teach a Kaplan course, and the course I believe is about 2 days/week over the course of about 2 months. If you similarly spend 1 or 2 days per week studying, you should be fine in a few months.
