How long did it take you to study for the GRE and how did you do it???
Question: I've been studying the word lists for months and when I review them I hardly remember any of them!!! Any ides?
Also, did you take the Kaplan course? was it helpful?
Answers: Everyone has a different style of learning that works best for them. I personally find that learning new words is easiest when I use them in sentences - especially funny ones.
It's harder to forget the meaning of the word contumelious, for example, if when you think of the word you remember the sentence Shooting a contumelious look at the teacher, the snotty cheerleader said, 'But I shouldn't have to do the work. My *father* makes more money than anyone in education ever could.' Suddenly remembering that contumelious means insolent, disdainful doesn't seem too hard.
I found that even if I didn't remember the exact meaning of the word after using this approach, if I encountered it again I would be able to remember the shades of meaning - in this case, if you were asked to give an antonym for contumelious, and one of the choices was respectful, you'd be fine just remembering that impertinent teenager, even if you didn't remember the exact meaning of contumelious.
That's my personal experience. Another fun way to practice is to think of ways you can insert the new words into everyday conversation. It's fun to serenely bring a new word into the conversation at the dinner table and see a sibling's or parent's brow furrow with confusion. :)
Good luck!
Oh, and I didn't take the Kaplan course, although I used some of their prep books. Books are good; I haven't heard that the course is worth the money.
divide words into known well, little known and unknown.
from the unknown catogrie take 1000 words and read all these words aloud with conc every day. it may take 1and a half hour but as days pass time comes down and words learnt is this manner are remembered better.
